Puyi passed away childless, although he had four wives and a concubine in total throughout his life. In his biography, From Emperor to Citizen , known in Chinese as The First Half of My Life , which was written during his jail term in Fushun, Liaoning province, Puyi related the story of his personal maids forcing his hand to have sexual intercourse with them when he lived in the Forbidden City in the early years of his adolescence. The last monarch in Chinese history, Aisin Gioro Puyi lived a tumultuous, dramatic life, which was adapted into the Oscar-winning film The Last Emperor.

They found a use for him and, when they took control of Manchuria in , they proclaimed Pu Yi as Emperor of Manchukuo. He remained titular emperor all through the Second World War, but he was never more than a Japanese puppet. Pu Yi now tried to fly to Korea and on to Japan, but he was caught by Soviet troops at Mukden airport and flown to Siberia where he was kept captive, though in comfortable circumstances, until when the Russians handed him over to the Communist regime in China.
Pu Yi was sure he would be executed but the Chinese put him in a management centre for war criminals along with some of his family and ex- Manchukuo officials and army officers. He was Prisoner No and tended the prison vegetable garden. He worked part-time as an assistant gardener at the Beijing botanical gardens and in married his fifth and last wife, a hospital nurse, who survived him.
After , he lived in Japanese-occupied Tianjin, and in Japan created the puppet state of Manchukuo in Manchuria under his rule. In , Pu Yi testified before the Tokyo war crimes tribunal that he had been an unwilling tool of the Japanese and not, as they claimed, an instrument of Manchurian self-determination.
Manchuria and the Rehe province were returned to China, and in Pu Yi was handed over to the Chinese communists. He was imprisoned at Shenyang until , when Chinese leader Mao Zedong granted him amnesty. After his release, he worked in a mechanical repair shop in Peking.
