Squeezed from the tube, or scooped from the jar, acrylic paint is a finely balanced dispersion of pigment in an emulsion of acrylic polymer and water. When exposed to the atmosphere, water in the emulsion evaporates, or is absorbed into the painting support.

The clear polymer particles organize themselves into a stable, hexagonal structure, trapping the pigment in place. The result? A paint film which is extremely stable, water-resistant, permanent and vibrant. Too much water will upset the balance and spread the acrylic polymer too thinly so the molecules can't reconnect properly to form a stable film. Instead you should dilute with an acrylic medium, which is essentially the same as the paint but without the color pigment. This milkyness slightly lightens the value of the color.

As water leaves the emulsion, and the binder clarifies, the value of the color darkens. This color change is commonly called the wet-to-dry color shift and is most noticeable with dark transparent pigments like alizarin and less noticeable with light opaque pigments like cadmium yellow.

As with watercolor and oil, acrylic offers its own distinct set of characteristics and attributes, most notably its versatility, immediacy, and durability. All in all, acrylic painting offers the artist a wide range of approaches, providing a wealth of creative potential for artistic innovation and fresh new ideas. Here is the story of the cultivation of acrylic painting as an artistic medium over the course of the 20th century. In these early years, acrylic resins were primarily intended for industrial use.

Early experimentation with acrylic paint in artistic contexts began in the first half of the 20th century. In the s and s, Mexican muralists began experimenting with these synthetic mediums. As early as , the Mexican social realist muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros founded and held a workshop in New York City to experiment with the latest synthetics and methods of application, many of which were used in his Echo of a Scream One notable attendee of this workshop was Jackson Pollock, who went on to use synthetic gloss enamel paints for his dripping and pouring techniques.
