One of the most essential aspects of progressivism is the strive for improvement. Even if the prospects are bleak, this school of thought propagates greater interest in less amount of time. Socialism is the state-controlled form of government in which the people have negligible control over their finances and overall life at large. If the main focus is on the economic aspect, the common populace might become overly dependent. This dependence leads to mental degradation and productivity stoops quite low. Some drawbacks of such a stringent socialist approach are the antithesis of statism, bare-minimum provision of individual freedom, and lack of performance-based incentives. Political ideology operates on a spectrum, so implementing the modern democratic socialist agenda would likely bring the country closer to a socialist society, but labelling these policies as socialist does not seem entirely accurate. Progressives have argued that democratic socialism is distinct from a more traditional understanding of socialism. This general disapproval of socialism has remained fairly steady across the past decade, despite the fact that support for greater government intervention in the economy has increased substantially.
Keeping that word in the news only helps fuel the Republican culture war machine and doom the prospects of progressive policies in Congress. Specific policies have also been weakened by questionable rhetoric. The slogan generally refers to the diversion of certain police resources to other social agencies so that they can deal with responsibilities that previously belonged to the police.
For example, the duty of responding to drug overdose calls could be transferred from the police department to public health services. Technically, police budgets would be defunded, but the main purpose of the policy is moreso to redirect funds and responsibilities in order to further specialize public safety interventions.
Worse still, this slogan provided content on a silver platter for the likes of Tucker Carlson, Rush Limbaugh, and conservative politicians.
With progressives saying they wanted to defund law enforcement, Republicans barely needed to spin the narrative. And the polling results were predictable. In a focus group made up of undecided voters who eventually voted Trump in , only one participant supported defunding the police. While the policy may not actually be too controversial, the slogan has seemingly doomed the chances of its legislative success. Very few leftist parties in contemporary Europe define themselves as socialist, as the movement has been largely discredited and lost much of its earlier working class support.
They also avidly avoid the socialist label because of its negative connotations. Immigrants who flocked to America sought to escape state oppression and simply wanted the opportunity to work, earn and compete, including millions from communist states. The current revival of socialist ideology in America is based on a mixture of idealism, cynicism and ignorance. Cynical socialist true believers who have never actually lived in socialist societies exploit the idealism of the younger generation and their evident ignorance about the tragic results of social engineering perpetrated by socialist parties.
And they are promising idyllic economic models that simply cannot be sustained. Historically, socialist utopias rapidly devolve into impoverished social dystopias, as Venezuela has demonstrated in recent years.
In reality, a state socialist agenda, even if dressed in enticing democratic or progressivist garb, guarantees economic decline, social conflict and increasing state repression.
