Why mlm doesn work

As Robert FitzPatrick predicts, most people at the bottom of the pyramid lose money. The only people making anything like a livable income are at the very top. And this research into Nu Skin:.

In fact, Jon Taylor from the Consumer Awareness Institute found that the odds of winning on the single spin of a roulette wheel in Las Vegas were:. On average, one in actually profited after subtracting expenses, and out of 1, lost money — to say nothing of the time invested. So, of 1, people who join an MLM, will lose money after subtracting expenses. And we need to be very clear here. We have yet to find an MLM that differs from this pyramid income structure.

Easy — you buy yourself. Some MLM reps even actively encourage their downline to make personal orders to achieve promotion, as this example from Valentus shows:. And the turnover rate for other MLMs is often just as high. This is known as the MLM merry go round. Ex-reps are also bullied into silence by their MLM and the network of reps they used to count as friends. So, despite what you may see online, or be told by MLM reps, the truth is that MLMs need to recruit aggressively because they need to replace a perpetual turnover of unhappy reps.

As we explain later, MLM business structures are designed to be complex and difficult to unravel. This makes it extremely hard to work out what the business opportunity really is, and how they even work. MLMs are not even legally required to publish income disclosure statements showing how commissions are paid, or how much money reps lose. Add in an army of reps desperately trying to recruit and sell on social media, and you have a situation where people will make crazy claims for money.

They also warned Young Living for ads like this from one of their reps:. Find out why sales pitches like this make MLM reps look like the modern day version of quack doctors and snake oil salesmen. The fact is that you cannot believe any claim made by an MLM or rep.

It will tell a very different story if their MLM produces one. Read more about the lies that MLM reps tell to recruit and sell here. This experience by ex-Younique rep Elle Beau is just one example:. Sometimes when people leave an MLM they discover that they have lost the support of their family, close friends and social network.

Some even remain trapped in MLMs as they no longer have a support network outside of it. MLMs have even apparently contributed to divorces and deaths:. Even suicides and murders related to MLM participation, have been reported. Chong explains why MLMs encourage you to sell to your family:. They trust you. And many of these MLM reps are desperate to cover their losses and make their quotas.

But as Chong concludes:. They just want to get their money back and are willing to use you. And this is just what occurs in an MLM. You pay to join usually with a starter kit or similar and then make money from the people you recruit under you your downline. Actively scan device characteristics for identification. It is sometimes referred to as Direct Sales or Network Sales.

The only true difference between these companies and a Pyramid scheme is that they must earn more money from selling a physical product than recruiting. It seems harmless enough, right? The problem is these companies tend to focus more on recruitment rather than on the product they want you to sell. That is where they are in a legal grey area. It might not. But the data shows that for nearly all of these companies if you want to earn any kind of income, you have to recruit.

Just one. Recruiting people for profit is a pyramid scheme. A lack of retail sales is also a red flag that a pyramid exists. Many pyramid schemes will claim that their product is selling like hot cakes. However, on closer examination, the sales occur only between people inside the pyramid structure or to new recruits joining the structure, not to consumers out in the general public.

Most MLMs skate the law by claiming that a distributor will earn the bulk of their income from selling a product, not recruitment. The problem is if you look at the income reports for the majority of these companies they heavily suggest that you will not earn the big bucks unless you recruit.

And most of their compensation plans focus heavily on the benefits of recruiting. The reason that this is a huge problem is that a pyramid scheme is based on the idea that you earn money by recruiting people, the people they recruit, and so on. This is highly illegal. The reason it is an extremely predatory practice is that the only people making money are at the top of the company or are people who joined when the company was still new.

There are two tell-tale signs that a product is simply being used to disguise a pyramid scheme: inventory loading and a lack of retail sales. Some of the most dangerous types of MLMs are the ones that sell health-related products. Whether it be work-out programs, diet pills or shakes, vitamins, energy drinks, or even essential oils. They all have one thing in common, at least here in the US.

They are skating the law because none of these industries are regulated very well if at all. But their distributors are out there every day on Instagram, Facebook, or Pinterest making wild claims or recommending unsafe use of the products. And more than likely none of their representatives have any sort of medical background to make these claims.

I call bullshit! If a sales-person for Nike repeatedly made claims that their shoes will prevent you from gaining weight, they would immediately be fired!

Companies, as good business practice, will protect their brand no matter what. Complete jokes. So what is the difference? Literally almost everything in life is a scheme of some sort. Then you have to pay obscene amounts to protect it, whereby you still will probably be out of pocket if something happens depending on your deductible.

So literally everything is a scheme in its own way. But to each their own.. If someone is selling something that someone feels they need in their life for whatever reason, then why shun them? It is the multi-level structure that I take issue with, because based on the recruitment focus, I also think that paying to join and work for a company where there is a Most are looking for instant gains and quit.

Not fail or loose money quit. No one makes money from recruiting in an MLM only sales of products or services. So she can have her opinion and choose to stay arrogant and ignorant her loss. If what she says is correct then according to her Warren buffet Is also a scamper who owns three of these mlm companies and says its the best investment he ever made.

Yes there are bad players and btw as far as traditional businesses are concerned 99 percent also fail and loose money in the first 10 years so then no one should start a business. Everyone should do go to work cone back home , go to work come back home go to work come back home go to work come back home go to work come back home 2 days off and few leaves do it days a year for 40 years and live on budgeting and after retirement die broke I mean seriously how stupid can one be.

The times are changing and things are going e-commerce and no one who is doing it ethically will run after people to buy their products no more of hoarding stuff in garages.

And btw if I bought an iPhone from the market did I loose any money no cause I bought a product worth that value. Your figures are totally off, MLM is the only industry with such a high failure rate, as I said in the article. People starting their own businesses have nowhere near as high a failure rate as MLMs. Lol no these companies are disgusting.

They sell products they know can cause damage to people and force products and memberships onto vulnerable people. You see the TRUE colours of the person you signed up with. Yes you get free sign ups, BUT to enable you to potentially sell to your friends on family you need to buy the products there is no such thing in life as something for FREE! I should write a book on how not to fall into the trap of MLM.

Run away whilst you can! Its taken me 4 years to realise this. Although interesting, this article was complete BS. An example would be this blog. There are easy ways to accomplish things, and there are hard way. There is risk and there is reward. IE: I can invest in small cap stock that have a high risk, but I have the potential of high reward. Everything in live requires investment as we live in a capitalist system.

My ex-wife wanted to be a teacher, so we invested 60K for her to acquire a degree in teaching. However, once she started looking for a job, she found that the market was totally saturated, and had to take a position making far less than she wanted.

It took years for her to pay off that initial investment. Did she get rich? No, she made 30K a year. What about restaurant servers? They make far below minimum wage with the HOPE of making tips based on the level of their service.

Why is this? Because to be a server requires little risk and investment to train. Just like when I went to college for Computer Program, very few had the ability to actually graduate.

If everyone did, I would have not found a job as the job market would be saturated. I counted on the fact that many would fail, and that is why the pay is high. Few can do it. What happens if his team does poorly? He loses his job. A middle class person may make K a year, but most likely, unless certain risks are taken, he will never make the millions the CEO makes, or the owner of a small business. If open a business that is Non-MLM, then I have to invest a lot of money to get that business up and running.

How do I make a passive income? Buy hiring people to run that business for me. I pay them based on what the market rate is. If MLM does not work, and it saturates the market, then explain to me how Avon has been in business since ? Is an Avon rep raking in millions? No, but they earn an income based on the amount of work they put in, how good they are at selling the products, and how well they train and motivate their people… just like a sales manager does.

To address the cult like approach you claim they have, consider this. You are the sum total of the 5 people you associate with. I back away from those people. Yes, but will I listen to them? If we did not distance ourself from naysayers, America would never have been founded. Steve Jobs would have never created the products that he did. You really should think about this a little deeper in the context of sales, capitalism, risk vs.

It is a mathematical fact. You can fact check me by using the sources that I provided, or by doing your own research. You will find that every income disclosure statement out there backs up my research. I would love for you to show me something similar.

Your wife making 30k a year after investing 60k is actually very successful, no? In 2 years, she would have earned back her initial investment. The two are not comparable. You mention paying people what the market rate is. It may not get them rich but they are paid minimum wage, or more. Because THAT would be insanity. MLMs do this. And yes, you speak about people working in hospitality in the US people from America seem to have this strange assumption that everywhere in the world operates just like they do, lol.

Again, not comparable. So, I think that it is YOU who should do a little more research. Look at the numbers. Or better still, join an MLM and let me know how it works out for you!

If I buy a subscription for a product off of a website, then I am paying for that product because that product is of value to me. It is no different if it is being done within the structure of a MLM that offers a legitimate high quality product. Being someone that truly cares about people I can totally see your perspective on how such models can become predatory. And this is something that is unfortunately a consequence of greed, in my opinion.

Participants in mlms are trying to make money off of those below them, not just use the product. And if the product is good then great, but most mlms require that participants buy the products in bulk for a high price.

Does the participant need dozens or more of the same thing? Probably not- her aim is to sell. Losing money is the simple act of spending more money than the MLM compensates you in commissions. Product consumption is not the only cost. Apart from the sign-up fee and starter packs, MLMs will also sell you marketing and training materials, monthly online access subscriptions, seminars, conferences and even tickets to national conventions.

They all followed that same formula in which the successful recruiters were mostly attractive young women promising great things.
